Peter Simpson on Colin McCahon

Te Manawa has a rich collection of the work of Colin McCahon (1919-87). All of it is now on display in Colin McCahon: A Centenary Exhibition.

On 19 October, New Zealand art historian Dr Peter Simpson will give an illustrated talk in the Art Gallery from 12.30 – 1.30pm. He will discuss each work in turn, placing it within the context of McCahon’s developing career and drawing on new research done for his latest book, McCahon – There is Only One Direction: 1919-1959 (Auckland University Press). It is the first volume of a major new monograph on the artist.

Peter Simpson is the author of numerous critically acclaimed books on New Zealand art, literature and cultural history, including several on Colin McCahon, and has curated exhibitions of McCahon’s work. In 2017 he received the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement (non-fiction).

Copies of McCahon – There is Only One Direction: 1919-1959 will be available at the talk, and may be signed by the author.
