For the duration of the Toioho XXV exhibition, Te Manawa is doing something different with Gallery 2.
Instead of a mix of collection works spanning a range of decades and artists, the racks have been given over entirely to the works of local artist John Bevan Ford. Two kaitiaki figures sculpted by Ford have been added to the display.
This selection is intended to complement the celebration of 25 years of Māori visual arts in nearby Galleries 1 and 3, and also to commemorate 15 years since Ford’s death in September 2005. The artist would have turned 90 in 2020.
