Te Manawa Offers New Worldwide Phenomenon

19 February 2010

Got something to say? Say it quick at Pecha Kucha night, a new event hosted by Te Manawa.

Te Manawa is the only venue in Palmerston North to host Pecha Kucha Nights, a true social networking event which offers Manawatū residents the chance to share their ideas with the community.

Te Manawa will be hosting Pecha Kucha Nights throughout 2010 on Thursday nights in the Art Gallery at 6.30pm.

The session dates are:

Thursday March 25th

Thursday May 27th

Thursday August 19th

Thursday October 28th

PKN was developed by Klein Dytham architecture (KDa) in February 2003 in Tokyo. These events are now held in over 215 cities worldwide.   Pecha Kucha Nights are open to anyone with up to 10 presenters at each evening, the only requirement is that the presentation must fit a prescribed format.

The format requires every presentation to be made up of 20 PowerPoint slides.  Each slide will automatically change every 20 seconds, once the speakers reaches the time of 6 minutes 40 seconds the next presenter begins.

Topics discussed at these evenings are diverse and could range from cake decorating, travel stories, favourite hobbies, career highlights, project designs, artistic inspirations or thoughts on topical issues.  At the March session of Pecha Kucha, the audience will hear about living in a more economic and green way, converging arts, photo blogs and more.

Heather Knox, Business Development Manager at AgResearch is one of the presenters at the March 25th event.  Heather will be sharing her personal photography project called Project 365.  Her aim is to take one photograph per day for a whole year.

I got the idea for this project in a roundabout way from Te Manawa’s first Pecha Kucha evening”, said Heather.

It’s also made me think about the importance of photographs as records of our lives and the strong links that they hold to our memories.”

At the evening on March 25th a $5 door charge will be in place with all proceeds going to Architecture for Humanity, a volunteer non-profit organisation set up to promote architecture and design and currently supporting rebuilding projects in Haiti.  Entry to all other sessions during the year will be a gold coin donation, and a cash bar will be available.
