War in Paradise: The unofficial story of New Zealand soldiers in New Caledonia
13 February to 9 May
Little is known of our participation in the pacific theatre in World War 2. People are surprised to hear that New Zealand had 20,000 members of the armed services pass through New Caledonia during the war. War in Paradise is the story of the troops’ time there, told through reproductions of official photographs and corresponding extracts. Alongside historic images and text is a selection of contemporary photographs by respected New Zealand photographer Paul Thompson, looking at New Caledonia as it is today and focusing on the New Zealand War Cemetery and Memorial in Bourail.
